How do I file a tax extension for my small business?

As a small business owner, you can file for an extension of time to file your tax return by submitting IRS Form 7004. This form must be filed by the original due date of your tax return, which for most small businesses is March 15th. If approved, the extension will give you an additional six months to file your tax return. Keep in mind that this extension only applies to the filing of your tax return, not to the payment of any taxes owed. Therefore, if you expect to owe taxes, you should still make an estimated tax payment by the original due date of your tax return to avoid penalties and interest.
